Probiotics shaping the weight management landscape
- Probiotics as safe solution for weight loss
The five-year CAGR (2018 - 2023) of weight loss supplements using probiotics ingredients was 48%, showing a much higher growth rate than other ingredient categories, such as amino acids, vitamins, botanicals, and herbs1) (Figure 1). As a result, it has caused an upheaval in the weight management category. The probiotics market stands out for its qualitative growth compared to other ingredient categories. From the development of highly effective strains to various clinical trials to prove specific claims based on the gut-organ axis, the market has grown qualitatively. Such interest in probiotic ingredients can also be seen in the weight loss category, and the global probiotics for weight management market is expected to be USD 4,518.9 million in 2028.2) There is no doubt that probiotics will play a key role in the weight loss category.

- Consumer Perception & NPD Trends of Probiotics for Weight Loss
The growth of probiotics as a key player in the weight loss sector is not surprising. This is because many consumers are already aware of the effects of probiotics on weight loss. According to Euromonitor International, the percentage of North American consumers(from the US and Canada) who responded that “weight loss or management” was the reason for choosing probiotics in 2023 increased by more than three times compared to the previous year3) (Figure 2). This is the result of market evolution, as probiotics, which were previously perceived only as gut health supplements, now also cover weight loss functions in line with the global weight management trend. Probiotics supplement companies are launching new products more aggressively than ever to meet consumer expectations for probiotics as a weight loss supplement. According to the Innova Platform, the five-year CAGR (2018 - 2023) of new probiotics products claiming a weight loss function was 22%4), showing an impressive growth rate and meeting consumer needs (Figure 3). Given these trends and data, focusing on the development of probiotics is a highly effective strategy for addressing market demand in weight management solutions.
