Navigating biotic landscape of Sleep and Skin health
Recent Trends in the Biotics Market
What are the current trends in the biotics market? A review of recently developed functions in new probiotic products that claim to help skin health and sleep health deserves attention. (Figure 1) Although the data released by different organizations may vary, it is clear that consumer demand for sleep and skin health within the market is steadily growing.
Figure 1. Global Probiotics Supplements per NPD Claim 3Y CAGR(2020-2023) Ranking
Among the new probiotic products released between 2020 and 2023, the 3Y CAGR of sleep support claims and skin health claims were 28% and 27%, respectively, which correspond to 2nd and 3rd in ranking. (Figure 2,3) This is evidence that consumer interest in new benefits of probiotics beyond gut health is increasing.1) In fact, among the many organs interacting with the gut, many studies are being conducted on the brain and skin. Many studies have associated gastrointestinal health with skin homeostasis and allostasis, and there is evidence of a bidirectional interaction between the gut and the skin. The gut microbiome can influence skin conditions through their metabolic activity and immunological impact.2) Also, growing evidence suggests that the microbiota-gut-brain axis contributes to the regulation of sleep behavior both directly and indirectly and may play a critical role in the etiology and pathogenesis of sleep disorders.3)
A Deep Dive into Sleep & Skin Health
Skin and sleep health is promising health and wellness area with continuously growing needs from consumers around the world. So what is happening in markets other than the biotics market?
The skin is an organ just like the heart, liver, and brain, and it has the biggest surface area of any organ in the human body. Due to its exposure to the external environment, consumers make great efforts to protect their skin health. According to a survey conducted by Euromonitor, consumers are consuming supplements to manage skin health, and the number of consumers choosing this method is growing each year.4) (Figure 4)
This is evidence of the needs of consumers who want to continuously care for their skin. In fact, the global beauty supplement market, which includes skin, hair, and nail health, reached USD 6.026 billion in 2023,5) and skin care supplements alone are worth USD 3.55 billion and have a 6Y CAGR (2024-2030) of 8%, which indicates that it is a promising market.6)
The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has declared the sleep deprivation of modern-day people to be a public pandemic.7) Four out of ten adult Americans fail to get enough sleep, and the rate is higher among adolescents and children.8) (Figure 5)
Due to this, many consumers consume various herbal ingredients and supplements containing melatonin to overcome sleep issues. The sleep aids supplement market reached USD 4.676 billion in 2023, and its growth rate is also impressive.9) (Figure 5) However, with awareness of the side effects of melatonin increasing, consumers are seeking healthier ingredients that can be consumed daily without health concerns.10) In fact, the interest in melatonin-free products began to grow in 2016 and reached its highest point in 2023,11) and consumers are avoiding OTC products that contain melatonin.12)
Ongoing Demand for Solutions to Skin and Sleep Issues
The consumer demand for better sleep and skin health solutions continues to grow. Sleep and skin health now rank 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in efforts to find new solutions for various health issues.13) (Figure 6) However, issues related to the skin and sleep also arise during certain periods of a person’s life. For example, women in menopause experience sleep deprivation, facial blushing, and dry skin due to the decrease in female hormones. That is why dietary supplements specifically targeting women in menopause are released. As such, skin and sleep health issues cover a broad spectrum, but also appear more in specific targets, making the need for sleep and skin health solutions more apparent. What if there is one solution for both sleep and skin health?
